Junior Basketball
What to expect from your first junior basketball trial
A practical guide for parents and players starting the DNBC free-trial process.
11 Sept 2026

A first basketball trial should help a family understand the environment just as much as it helps the club understand the player. DNBC uses the trial process to recommend a suitable next step rather than expecting families to choose a division on their own.
Before the session
Start by registering the player's interest and sharing useful background information such as age, experience and anything that may help DNBC identify an appropriate prospective team.
At the trial
Where a suitable team and roster opportunity are available, the player attends a free team training session. They can meet the coach, train alongside prospective teammates and experience the structure of a normal DNBC session.
After the session
DNBC considers the player's age, experience, confidence, ability and current roster availability before recommending the most appropriate team or development pathway.
If the best-fit team does not currently have a roster position, development does not need to stop. DNBC may recommend training with a team and/or joining a suitable development program while waiting for the next appropriate opportunity.
There is no obligation to join
The first trial session is free. Families only move into registration, fees and the compulsory playing uniform if they decide to proceed after the recommendation.
